Evidence shows and the common sense warns that with age our balance system can deteriorate. We know that PREVENTION
IS BETTER THAN CURE. But the question is can we prevent the deterioration of the balance system? What can we do to
prevent or slow down balance deterioration?
Currently, Samy is developing vestibular-specific fitness exercises to improve vestibular and balance fitness. While these exercises could be useful for any age group, people in their 50s and above will benefit the most. He envisions that these simple exercises can be easily incorporated into the daily routine and be practised along with the commonly practised exercises such as
Yoga, Tai Chi and Pilates.
Samy regularly contributes to the research activities involving balance and vestibular exercises as an Independent Clinical
Consultant, currently, he is part of a research team (University of Birmingham) that looks into "Feasibility of Community -
Based Balance exercises for the elderly people run by trained volunteers".
Samy won CSP's Robert Williams International Award in 2011 at the WCPT congress held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, for a
research poster that he presented at the conference.
